2008: THE NELSON MANDELA PAINTING ON TIMES SQUARE

 
I am a painter for more than 35 years. But 2008 changed my career completely when on Mandela’s birthday my legendary Nelson Mandela portrait was displayed on the biggest billboard of the world, Times Square, New York. International press wrote: “Peter Engels knows how to capture the very soul”. And that is exactly what I wanted to do in this painting. It is titled ‘Protester, Prisoner, President’ and it tells a moving life story of one of the most remarkable men of our times.

2009: PRINCE OF MONACO BUYS THE GRACE KELLY PAINTING


In spring of last year Prince Albert of Monaco bought my Grace Kelly portrait. It was said that this painting was once more a masterpiece, unique art with an urban look and a sophisticated and contemporary feel. Kind words for a painting of one of the most beautiful and significant women ever.

2010: THE KARL LAGERFELD PAINTING IN KNOKKE, PARIS, ANTWERP, MIAMI


In Soho, New York, I ran into Karl Lagerfeld. The brief but intense meeting resulted in a stunning art outburst: my Lagerfeld painting, titled ‘The New York Meeting’. Dark glasses, black suit, white ponytail,... flamboyant Karl Lagerfeld fits precisely the sepia color palette I use to paint my ‘Vintage Portraits’. This painting was the eye catcher at my exhibitions in Knokke, Paris, Antwerp and Miami.

ART FOR CHARITY


I was delighted to be able to participate in some charity events raising funds for heart surgeons in Mauritania, for help after the flood in Pakistan, for children’s education and for sports facilities. It was truly inspiring and I am so honored to be a part of it!

I try to offer a fresh approach to art. I am convinced to continue on new paths in the same direction. I think that originality, craftsmanship, authenticity, a deeper philosophy and a unique style remain important keywords in my work.
